As far as putting limitations on digital content, that's their right. It is _their_ content. If they make the wrong decision, they'll come around when someone smarter makes the right one.
I think this is just the point. Thay have made the wrong decisions. Again and again. We now have a situation where all of the DRM incentives so far actually stimulate piracy. Because circumventing the rights management results in a better consumer experience.
Here's an example.
I own hundreds of DVDs - I was a classic early adopter. I like to get movies early. I live in the UK and the movie studios like to release movies later in Europe. So I own a large collection of Region 1 DVDs. I also rent a lot of DVDs perhaps 3 or 4 per week. These are all Region 2.
But the DVD drives in Apple computers are all region-locked. Five changes and that is it. So you have to pick. Rented disks or dvd collection.
So thanks to a studio-imposed attempt to control the market. They are undermining my legitimate enjoyment of my own movie collection. I do not feel grateful to them for this. It might be their right - but it is morally wrong.
As a customer I resent their interference. I regret paying for so many disks because my experience has been soured. If you are a loyal customer, your loyalty should be rewarded and not punished.
The way to beat piracy is to identify loyal paying customers, and guarantee them a better, more convenient, more rewarding experience. Send them newsletters. Give paying customers free iPod versions. Give them behind the scenes extras. Shiny boxes, free competitions. Reward them for paying.
But instead they are so terrified of piracy, that publishers are willing to ruin the experience of paying customers in the impossible hope that it will slow down the access of non-paying customers.
Consumers punish this sort of behavior. And they have a right to do that - even if its only a moral right and not a legal right.

Whenever i plug my AC adapter into my PB it starts charging as normal. As soon as i plug in a firewire cable it kicks my AC power off. Can someone tell me what is going on ? I need to use my G5 as a hardrive and burn a DVD studio Pro DVD and the battery won't suffice. Ideas ?

One of the patents:
Mobile telephone capable of displaying world time and method for controlling the same
An apparatus and method for calculating and displaying local time for a plurality of cities in the world. The apparatus includes a memory for storing Greenwich mean time (GMT) information for each of the plurality of cities. The apparatus sets a reference time and counts the time that elapses from when the reference time is set. The apparatus calculates a local time of a city selected by a user, which is based on a difference between the GMT of the selected city and the GMT of a present location of the apparatus, the reference time and the counted elapsed time. The reference time may be either a time set by the user or a system time acquired from a signal generated from a remote system.
How can companies get patents for such trivial algorithms???
Now I'm not a lawyer, but I do know that there's only one GMT. Cities don't get their own GMT. That's kinda the point of the G in GMT. If Samsung think that Apple is storing the "GMT of each city", and the "GMT of the location of the device" then they're in for some disappointment.
On the other hand if they've patented a method for botching your alarms every time the clocks go back/forward they may be onto something.

For those who cannot give blood, I understand that feeling as I'm in that group with 2 cases of cancer. Before I was diagnosed I did give a few (too few) times and wish I had given more.
For those who can give blood, I've seen the huge need. My wife had acute leukemia (ALL) and over 18 months of chemo was in desperate need of blood 10 times. Fortunately the blood & platelets were available when needed.
After that experience I felt I should have given more, but have no hesitation asking you to give a few units.
Sorry to hear about your wife's diagnosis - is she in remission?
It is good to read real stories mentioning the need for blood.

I also think Apple is going to be even more secret hush hush with the leak last year. With people thinking it might come in September (it might), people won't be hitting bars around Cupertino.

ATI 5870 from Apple Store.
Proceed with getting RAM? Well, just buy it and stick it into the computer.
Installation guides are available at apple.com/support.
To get the necessary specs for the RAM, just google on your mac pro model. (i'd say you have a 4.1)

I would prefer if they could hire a team of people to make the lockscreen more valuable than a picture frame.
Seriously, why can't I have a calendar, some email and text headers? Or have them find a way to remind me that I have a calendar alert?
That would seriously make my phone a magical device.

Anyone else going to the Promenade?
I have a reserve and I plan on arriving at 5am. I was only able to get 1 reserve so I am hopeful to get a 2nd walk up upgrade for my wife.

Yes, it's a loss leader item.

"It's obviously irritating to Apple that they're getting used this way," says PJC's Gene Munster. ...
Actually, it probably helps Apple in the big picture. Eighty people get a fantastic deal - and they know it's a special deal, so the real value of the iPad is reinforced. And a whole lot of people, who missed out on the deal, have reinforced the perception that the iPad is not a commodity, and that Apple's msrp is 'true' price. And further, those people who missed out have now 'decided' that they want an iPad, and a fair number will go and buy one at full price. Apple wins in this case. Sold 80 units to TJ's at full price, and TJ's pays to fuel iPad frenzy in their customers. Laughing to the bank.

I'm in.
2009 Mac Pro Octo 2.26 reporting for duty.
alright! that machine should put out some good points! as mentioned before, there's no bigadv for Mac OS X right now, only windows and linux. so if you are running snow leopard, you can still run the smp client, and with a passkey, you'll still get a bonus
I'll have my new i7-2600k computer coming online sometime next week after I complete its construction and thorough testing (ahem.. overclocking..). All of the parts for it are arriving today (including the new revised SB motherboard finally!), but except for unfortunately the ram is coming via USPS and is currently in Ontario, CA bound for northern CA so it may be here on saturday but I'm not optimistic. I'm pretty excited for this actually, this will be (relatively speaking) the fastest computer I've ever had.
great! from what i hear, you should get a nice overclock on that! let us know how it goes!
